Do women with menorrhagia need iron?

چکیده

Haematological indices of iron deficiency and serum ferritin concentrations were compared in 42 women complaining of menorrhagia and in 34 with normal menstrual loss. No significant differences in haemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, or mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were found between the two groups. Serum ferritin concentrations were significantly lower (p less than 0.001) in patients with menorrhagia. Though the iron stores in these women were significantly reduced, only a few were anaemic. Thus, women complaining of heavy menstrual loss do not require prophylactic iron supplements.

Treatment of anemia in the adolescent female.

Many adolescents are at an increased risk for anemia due to their rapid growth and increasing muscle mass. However, adolescent females with heavy menstrual bleeding are at an even greater risk for anemia. Evaluation of inherited and acquired platelet function disorders in iron deficient women with menorrhagia by whole blood lumi-aggregometer.

The commonest cause of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in premenopausal women is often menstrual blood loss. However, no organic pathology is identified in more than 50% of menorrhagic women. We therefore investigated inherited and acquired bleeding disorders among women with unexplained menorrhagia who developed IDA. In vitro whole blood platelet aggregation (PA) with ADP, arachidonic acid (AA), ...

The prognosis of idiopathic hypochromic anaemia.

Moore (I950) considers that there is no justification now for describing hypochromic anaemia as idiopathic because iron deficiency never develops unless iron is lost from the body in repeated pregnancies, chronic haemorrhage or normal menstruation. In this paper, however, the description of idiopathic has been given to those cases in which hypochromic anaemia is the primary diagnosis, in order ...

Bleeding disorders in premenopausal women: (another) public health crisis for hematology?

Premenopausal women with bleeding disorders represent a major public health problem. Estimates suggest up to 20% of women with menorrhagia have an underlying bleeding disorder (corresponding to a prevalence of 1.5-4 million American women). Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common bleeding disorder among women with menorrhagia, affecting up to 20% of such patients. Besides menorrhagia, i...
